Great weather and well prepared wickets greeted the 14 teams in Alexandra. South Canterbury was edged out of winning by Canterbury Country. On the second day, Nelson halted the Christchurch Red's successful run of 42 matches unbeaten (record.)

South Canterbury enjoyed a flying start and won easily. That team made 635 runs at 28.8 while they took 68 wickets at 8.78. ChCh Red endured four no result games but extended their unbeaten Tournament record to 41 consecutive games.

All games on artificial surfaces, some adequate but several strips a lottery. Smiling bowlers became overnight hat trick sitters. Form batsmen became mining experts while a pinch hitter prospered. South Canterbury and Canterbury Country shared the title after five days obtaining four wins each.

Christchurch Red scored a record 233 for 2 off 31 overs and went on to win the tournament - having been 31 tournament matches in a row unbeaten. This team scored 889 runs at 32.9 and took 70 wickets @ 8.8 rpw. Otago Gold was the 14 team. It was New Zealand's Cricket Centenary and badges were given to players and officials. The title "Metro" was added for the first time to Dunedin, Invercargill and Christchurch - the latter using evenly selected teams under the Red and Black banner. See full story »

After a rain shortened third day, four teams shared the title: Christchurch, Central Otago, North Canterbury & Nelson. Highest score of 152 from 145 from Craig McMillian was a record. Rachel & Naomi Wallace (twins) from Buller were the first girls included in the Tournament.
