With West Coast pulling out, both Christchurch and Otago provided 2 equal teams to even the numbers for the Tournament held at Hagley Park - Christ's College grounds. Great batting conditions resulted in ten centuries being recorded. Otago's final signalled it's success, Richard Hadlee congratulating the team effort in the nor-wester. Craig Cumming scored a record 3 centuries

Tuesday was rained out in the tournament won by Christchurch but Southland A just failed to finish off Ashburton when it raced through 30 overs in the last hour and a catch going down in a mad-cap rush to finish.

After five thrilling days, any of size teams were poised to emerge. Nelson won this Tournament by making runs @ 21.27 and picking up 68 wickets @ 9.08. The Christchurch team became eliminated by Southland on the first morning when Jeff Wilson was unleashed, taking 6 for 27 in it's meagre 64. Jeff created a new record of 37 wickets at 7.29.

In the lead up to this 1984 Tournament, Chris Cairns had moved up to Christchurch in the winter. As Captain, Chris ended his his 5 year SI Tournament reign of terror on opposing hopes. He continued several seasons ahead of his counterparts in all under-age level before being whisked over to Perth for his first Test Match. Christchurch duly won the Tournament. 18th Tournament at Timaru January 1981
West Coast withdrew at the last minute which allowed ChCh A & B + South Canty A & B to maintain the 14 team format. The winner was Central Otago after a gripping final with Christchurch B. The tournament was "stacked" with talent.
