This tournament is the "flag ship" of Junior Cricket in the South Island. It has no peer in Junior cricket anywhere in New Zealand. Many players representing their provinces at this Tournament have gone on to play for the New Zealand Black Caps.

It has been operating very successfully on an annual basis since 1963. Rules of the Tournament enable all teams - even those from areas with smaller player bases - to participate and have an input into final standings.
