2000 to 2009

2009 (46th) Rangiora
The weather was very hot all week with temperatures above 30C. Crunch games for both Christchurch teams on Day 1 with Black having their toughest test against Nelson and Red coming up against last years joint winners Canterbury Country.
At the end of the week the surprise winners were Mid Canterbury who had a great week securing 5 first innings wins and 25 points in all. The last time they won the tournament was in 1966 so well done to them. Christchurch Black came unstuck when they could not get first innings points against Marlborough on day 3, having to settle for 2 points and a draw.
The final day was very exciting with 4 teams having realistic chances of winning the tournament. Mid Canterbury must have been disappointed to only post 93 but did very well to then bowl Marlborough out for 84. Once they had secured first innings points the trophy was safe. Black played very well to secure the outright win they needed and this secured them second place in their own right. Red were in with a chance of an outright against North Otago but could not get them out cheaply enough in the second innings.
Well done to Black players Gus Hewitt and Chris Warner who were the only century makers and a first for Chris Warner who also secured a hatrick in the same tournament. We think that is the first time one player has achieved this remarkable double. Read more

2008 (45th) Westport
Rain washed out the first day and play didn't clear for play to start on the second day until 2.30pm. This meant that time didn't enable a result that might otherwise have occurred in some matches. Fine weather then returned with the temperature on the Thursday reaching 30 degrees. Going into the last day, Christchurch Black was leading by just a point from Canterbury Country and Southland Country. Day 5 hot and dry. A nail biting finish which literally went down to the last ball of the tournament. Christchurch Black needed three wickets in the last over of the match against Mid-Canterbury to win the match and the tournament outright. They got two wickets but the batsman held out the last ball. Big closing ceremony and everyone very complimentary. Read more

2007(44th) Oamaru
Fine sunny conditions on the first two days was followed by a rained out day on Wednesday - where each team received two points while the following two days were cooler. A very well run tournament with good playing conditions saw Christchurch Black the victor and unbeaten after a nail biting finish on the last day where Dunedin Metro threatened to upset the winner. The fielding trophy was picked up by Nelson for the 13th time. Mid Canterbury returned to Oamaru with 9 of their team from Nelson and were somewhat unlucky as they scored the most runs at the best rate (640 @ 4.05 RPO) and while they were unbeaten, two no result games left them stranded 3 points short of Christchurch Black. Buller beat Marlborough to secure it's first win at the tournament.
