St Andrews and Heaton take CJCA titles

Two tense finals saw Heaton Intermediate in the Girls and St Andrews College in the Boys emerge as CJCA School Champions for 2018 after their respective 20/20 matches recently.  Both schools advance directly to the Canterbury Association finals to be held in Term 4.

In the Boys Breens Intermediate won the toss and fielded and bowled well to restrict St Andrews (pictured below) to a modest 84 in their 20 overs.  St Andrews however carried over their imposing form from the qualifying tournament to field and bowl like demons and not give Breens a sniff rolling them for 26.  Breens will now play a repechage match against a Country or Mid/South Canterbury School to gain a place in the Canterbury finals.  Many thanks to Cam Baillie from Christchurch Boys High School for umpiring the Final

In the Girls final played on Hagley Corner no 3 Christchurch South Intermediate won the toss and opted to field and gained 2 early wickets to put pressure on defending National Champions Heaton Intermediate.  An excellent partnership  between the Lucy’s (Campbell and Easton) featuring aggressive running and some crisp drives square of the wicket put Heaton in a strong position which the lower order capitalized on, racing through to 154 off their 20 overs.

Christchurch South’s openers batted cautiously early but held their wickets in a 50 run opening partnership before both fell in quick succession, with the asking rate around 10 per over Christchurch South couldn’t score enough but still posed a highly credible 122 in response.  As with the Boys, Heaton (pictured below) go straight through to the Canterbury Tournament with Christchurch South getting a 2nd life in which they will be hard to roll if they put a similar effort on the board.
